Niantic’s Greg Borrud: From falling into games to making games for the real world

Niantic is known for its approach to augmented reality and location-based gaming. In the summer of 2016, Pokémon Go changed the world and how communities form around mobile games. Greg Borrud, the general manager at Niantic’s Los Angeles studio, has watched the industry grow and evolve from a reliance on PCs to consoles to phones that are more powerful than our 1997 Pentiums.

I sat down during the second day of GamesBeat Summit 2020 to chat about Borrud’s origin story in the game industry, his work at Seismic Games, Niantic’s approach to AR during the COVID-19 pandemic, and what the future of AR may have in store for Niantic’s fans.

The Kroger Co. has become the latest grocer to introduce an initiative featuring solutions from DailyPay, a SaaS fintech solutions company, to support their front-line workers.

Kroger is launching a benefit that will enable employees to receive their paychecks as they earn them, in addition to raises and bonuses. ExpressPay, powered by DailyPay,gives employees the financial flexibility to pay their bills, as well as to buy necessary supplies as their earnings are readily available, not just on payday.

“We are proud of our amazing staff who has been working hard to keep our neighborhoods fed,” said Taylor Leevers, special projects manager at Franktown, Colo.-based Leevers Supermarkets, which, along with Cleveland-based Dave’s Markets, also provides DailyPay for its workers. “In addition to hiring dedicated cleaning staff, installing sneeze guards at registers and providing appreciation bonuses, we are also proud to offer DailyPay to employees who want access to their pay on a daily basis.”

Since the COVID-19 crisis began, DailyPay has seen an increase in businesses signing onto and ramping up solution launches. Currently, more than one in eight grocery store workers across the country have access to DailyPay, according to the company.

Social Media Platforms Step Up To Aid Older People Struggling With COVID-19

The distancing and quarantine procedures that are now familiar to the world due to COVID-19 can be easier for younger generations to accept. Whether it’s millennials or Generation Z, millions of those under 50 grew up with computers, cellphones and tablets tuned to social media and inviting personal and professional connections over long distances. Recent forced isolations can be easier if you’re already accustomed to reaching out to other humans virtually.

Unfortunately, older individuals who grew up in a world in which social interaction meant going outside and mixing with human beings face to face can struggle with finding contacts and other resources in the age of mandatory social media. In some spots, special services stepped forward to serve the senior set.

With a looming recision all but guaranteed even before the Coronavirus quarantine lifts, senior citizens and other older social media users could face practical lifestyles without being able to venture out into the world to confront them. The social platformAmava.com looks to connect retirees through flexible work options, volunteer opportunities and unique travel experiences.
