Driller Southwestern Taps Startup to Monitor Gas Emissions

Shale producer Southwestern Energy Co. has agreed to seek environmental certification for all of its natural gas production, the latest example of how the industry is moving to address concerns about methane escaping into the atmosphere.

Southwestern said in a statement that it will seek to certify its output as “responsibly sourced gas” using independent analysis from Project Canary, a startup that measures greenhouse-gas emissions in real time. Project Canary will analyze the explorer’s wells to verify that they meet certain environmental standards, and it will install emissions monitoring devices at all of the company’s production sites.

The move by Southwestern comes as the energy industry faces unprecedented pressure from shareholders urging companies to meet environmental, social and corporate governance criteria. Investors are pushing oil and gas producers to curb their emissions, and U.S. gas exporters are offering more transparency about each cargo’s carbon footprint.

Why NBA superstar Steph Curry just invested in Seattle pay equity startup Syndio

Seattle pay equity startup Syndio has scored more than $30 million in funding in its four years, but a new $1 million assist from early-stage investors Penny Jar Capital, announced Monday, is especially noteworthy because the firm is anchored by NBA star Stephen Curry.

A two-time league MVP with the Golden State Warriors, some have called Curry the greatest shooter in NBA history. Off the court, the shots he’s taking on companies such as Syndio are also gaining attention.

“This was really important to me because he’s not part of this hype cycle around equity,” Syndio CEO Maria Colacurcio told GeekWire. “He’s really been committed to this for a long time. And that was really before the U.S. Women’s National Team stuff kicked up.”

For Older Adults, The Internet Has Become A University, A Gym, A Support Group, And A Coffee Shop

As we cross the mid-point of 2021, older adults are starting to enjoy going out again, resuming work, and doing some light traveling, but many are still reluctant to re-join their gyms, attend crowded events, or engage in enclosed venues with people they don’t know. This is especially true for people with compromised immune systems or other conditions which may still make them vulnerable to Covid-19. However, thanks to online communities, staying safe does not sentence anyone to a life of inactivity, loneliness, or boredom. It’s important to also note that many older adults were active and engaged throughout the pandemic, and for some, that took stepping out of their comfort zone, technologically speaking

During most of 2020 and into 2021, being social required being online. Kids did it for school; parents had to be online to understand what was required of them in schooling their kids; mid-life adults were online for work. Retired adults could have isolated themselves and sunk into a lonely depression, with only the occasional Zoom meeting with their kids and grandkids. However, a variety of organizations, both new and old, saw the gap and rose to the occasion with a cornucopia of opportunities for men and women who were faced with an imposed isolation of indefinite length.
